Chess Wellness

Given all the untimely deaths and other serious problems, I thought about what I could do about future problems.  Maybe it would be possible to create a peer support network or nonprofit organization.  When I told a few people about it, several of them asked whether it would offer health insurance.  While this is a worthwhile goal, I think its also a goal that is far off.  Firstly these are the areas I have in mind for the long run:

  • Employment Counselling
  • Funeral and Burial
  • Health Insurance
  • Housing
  • Medical
  • Mental Health
The steps that I envision for the long run are:
  • Phase One: Peer Counselling, Peer Support, Peer Networking, Supportive Community
  • Phase Two:  Professional Counselling
  • Phase Three: Health Insurance and Medical Support
Unlike a chess playing organization,  such an endeavor is likely to be approved by the IRS for 501(c)(3) status.  I actually had an organization approved for 501(c)(3) status many years ago.  A 501(c)(3) organization could receive tax deductible donations, bequests and grants.  While the IRS approval process is not trivial,   it is feasible.

In NYS, a nonprofit organization must have at least three directors in order to incorporate.  If this is of any interest to you, please write me at jgraham at nystar dot com.
